Dave has been involved with work and/or recreational activities requiring bush knowledge and 4×4 skills since 1978. Since 1995 Dave has conducted 8 overland round trip journeys through Africa to Europe.
Dave has successfully completed ten “true” Trans-Africa expeditions over the last 20 years and guided clients to 27 African countries and 12 European countries.

Friendship Expedition 1995 – 2 months
Pretoria (South Africa) to London (UK) via the east coast countries of Africa, Israel, Greece, Italy, Switzerland, France and the English Channel.
Tip to Top Expedition 2001 – 3 months
From the southernmost point of Africa, Cape Agulhas (South Africa), to the northernmost point of Africa, Bizerti (Tunisia), via the east and north coast countries of Africa ending in London (UK) via Sicily, Italy, Switzerland, France and the English Channel.
Cape to Hamburg Expedition 2003 – 3½ months
A chartered expedition from South Africa to Hamburg via the east coast countries of Africa.
Cape to London Expedition 2007 – 4 months
From Cape Agulhas (South Africa) to London (UK) via the east coast countries of Africa, Libya, Tunisia, Sicily, Italy, Switzerland, France Spain, Morocco, Spain and the English Channel.
Trans-Africa Expedition Northbound 2008 – 3½ months
The east coast countries of Africa, Rwanda and Uganda (gorilla trekking) to Cairo (Egypt).
Trans-Africa Expedition Southbound 2008 – 1 month
The east coast countries of Africa and included South Sudan that was war-ridden for more than two decades.
Trans-Africa Expedition Northbound Leg I 2010 – 2½ months
The south west coast countries of Africa, Nigeria, Niger, Mali, Mauritania, Western Sahara and Morocco.
Trans-Africa Expedition Link / Europe and the Middle East Leg I 2010 – 1 month
Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Jordan to Cairo (Egypt).
Trans-Africa Expedition Southbound Leg III 2010 – 2½ months
The east coast countries of Africa back to South Africa.
Trans Africa Expedition 2014 South Africa to Egypt 4 months
East African countries including Rwanda and Uganda.

Herman is active in most sporting disciplines.
He completed the millennium challenge consisting of – paddling the duzi canoe marathon, swimming midmar mile, cycling Cape Argus, running the comrades marathon and climbing Mt. Kilimangaro all in one year.
Herman has completed a total of 11 comrade marathons, 7 duzi canoe marathons, 3 iron man challenges, mountain bike races and various other competitions.
He was the owner of a 4×4 equipment retail and vehicle fitment center for 5 years and completed a 4×4 instructor driver training course, 4×4 assessors driver training and a 4×4 guide course.
He is currently in the construction business.
